Does It Need To Move Under Its Own Power?

Worth knowing before you call: does the car roll, does it steer, are all four tyres holding air. None of these stop us collecting it, but knowing in advance means the right approach turns up on the day rather than being worked out on your doorstep.

If it's blocked in by other vehicles, sat on a narrow residential street, or stuck on one of Huddersfield's steeper roads, mention that too. Some of the town's older streets weren't built with modern trucks in mind, so a heads-up on access saves everyone time on the day.

Cat S And Cat N: What The Letters Actually Mean

There are two further categories worth knowing, Cat A and Cat B, separate from S and N rather than older versions of them. Cat A means the whole vehicle should be crushed, no parts salvaged. Cat B means the body shell gets crushed but usable parts can be recovered first. Cars in either category are still worth something to us, since it's the vehicle's actual condition and weight that sets the price.

Flood-damaged cars deserve a specific mention. Wet interiors, corroded connectors and confused electronics don't always show up straight away, which is exactly why private buyers tend to shy away from them once they know the history. We're not put off by a car that's been sitting with damp carpets for a fortnight, we'll price it as it actually is rather than assume the worst or the best.

Could It Be Worth More As Parts Or Salvage?

Not every damaged car is worth the same as scrap metal. Newer models, or ones with valuable components still intact, alloys, a recent engine, an infotainment system, can sometimes fetch more sold for parts or salvage than processed as straight scrap. If that's the case with yours, we'll say so honestly rather than quote a scrap price on something worth more another way.

What Happens After Collection

Once it's loaded, the car goes to an Authorised Treatment Facility, the only kind of site legally permitted to depollute and dismantle end-of-life vehicles in the UK. We notify the DVLA once it's been processed, as required by law, so it comes off your name and stops being your responsibility.

Worth Comparing Before You Commit

Getting more than one quote isn't a bad idea, especially on a car that might be worth more than straight scrap value. What's worth checking on any site you're comparing us against: are they licensed as a scrap metal dealer, and do they actually collect vehicles themselves or just pass leads on to a network.

How You Get Paid

By law, vehicle collectors can't hand over cash on the day. Payment's made by bank transfer once we've confirmed the vehicle matches what you described, so there's a paper trail if you ever need to check back on it.

What To Have Ready Before We Arrive

Your V5C logbook if you've still got it, though a missing one isn't a dealbreaker either. Photo ID and proof of address help too. Worth a final check through the glovebox, boot and door pockets before we arrive, since anything left inside goes with the vehicle at collection.
