Proof of address needs to be dated within the last three months and show your name clearly. None of this needs arranging in advance, the declaration comes with the collection team and you sign it there and then.

Why We Have To Ask At All

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 requires every licensed collector to record who they're buying from and check that against real identification, log book or not. A missing V5C doesn't remove that requirement, it just means meeting it a different way, the one above.

If The Car's Registered To Someone Else

If the car's still showing a previous keeper, a parent, an ex-partner, someone who's passed away, tell us that upfront rather than trying to sort it out beforehand. It doesn't change whether we'll take the car, it just means talking through what to put in the letter you'll eventually send the DVLA so the records catch up with reality.

No Photo ID Either?

Tell us before collection rather than on the day. There are alternatives, a birth certificate alongside other proof of address, for instance, but they need checking in advance rather than worked out on the doorstep while the truck's waiting.

What If It Turns Up After Collection?

It happens more often than you'd expect, usually in a drawer nobody thought to check first time round. It won't change anything about the sale itself, since the declaration and ID you provided already cover that.
